a narrative-heavy fishing game about change.

made in GB STUDIO by chris maltby.

summary

many years ago, a passionate boy named MIO tried to fish for the GOD OF THE SEA. but the GOD proved much too powerful, and something very important was taken from MIO that day.

it's been nine years since then, and MIO should move on to bigger and better things... but the desire to recover what he lost keeps him trapped in his small coastal town. if he has any hope of leaving, MIO must catch the GOD OF THE SEA again and get it back.

more info

this demo was made in ~3 months for a college game design course. i had an absolute blast with it, and am itching to continue- and hopefully, finish- the project this upcoming year. this is a story i really want to tell, and i hope you all enjoy what i have of it so far!

note: as this is still a rough demo of the game, minor bugs, unpolished assets, and unfinished dialogue will be present. i'm working on polishing up this demo in the coming weeks and adding the missing elements- however, to my knowledge, it is able to be completed without any issues! if you run into anything potentially game-breaking or are simply lost on how to continue, please do let me know.

any overall feedback you have would be greatly appreciated!

thank you so much for playing. <3

I really loved the vibe of this! Working with GBstudios limitations is a huge hassle but I really enjoyed how much detail you can cram in, in sprite of it. I think I would probably advise looking into different sounds for longer dialogue, the text sound could get a little grating. Like super said I think a 'back' option will help intuit it. I saw your comment talking about enjoying the Stardew Valley fishing and I think this is a really cool way of integrating that mechanic while being more accommodating. Really interested in seeing how easy it will be to identify different fish.

thank you so so much, i really appreciate you taking the time to play and im so glad you liked it!!! it means a lot that the fishing was fun and accommodating, that was definitely the goal with it. :')

and ty for your feedback! i definitely was wondering if the dialogue sound was too annoying, haha, so i absolutely will change it in the future. ^^

lovely demo so far! the vibes are good. the only thing is that i would like to be able to exit out of the menu by pressing the "b" button or having an "exit menu" option tho (not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but its always the little things, isnt it);; hope you keep up the great work, cant wait to see where this goes :)

thank you so much!!!! i really appreciate you playing and im glad you enjoyed it!!

and the menu is actually able to close w the same button it was opened (start) but it's good to know that it's not as intuitive as i anticipated!! i'll see what i can do about that in the future so ty for ur feedback :)

My favorite genre of anime  is probably “slice of life” and this nails that vibe so perfectly. I know this is in a “rough” state, but the dialogue was fun to read, I enjoyed the fishing style you went for, and the pixel art really sets the right tone. Hold tightly onto this project and keep pushing forward because you’ve got something truly special here. Really enjoyed this one!

thank you so much for the kind words!!! i'm so glad you enjoyed it!!! slice-of-life is one of my fav genres as well and i tried really hard to capture that vibe so i'm glad it worked!!!
